J4O 15.7.2000.2785

Just tried the latest version today and here are some feedback for your kind consideration.

First, the J4X Add-In is very very slow to launch (>20 sec at least).  When I show a JChem sheet to others, I feel really bad to see the banner screen staying there for a good while.  It was not like this back to J4X version 6.2.  Optimizing the launch would go a long way in improving users' impression about the software.

Second, some minor issues related to license manager. (1) I already have license installed in previous version (and it was inherited correctly into the new version after uninstalled old and installed new). My license is Expiration:Never, Support Expiration Date: 2014-xxx. When I clicked on "From SMILES", it complained about lack of license.  So probably the code does not check "Expiration:Never"? Then I installed a new license.clx file, without restarting Excel.  "From SMILES" only created large cells, but blank structures. Redraw, Show/Hide did not help. Restart Excel fixes it.

Thanks!

I create a very simple sheet with 15 SMILES strings.

Click on "From SMILES".  It took 40 seconds for the banner to disappear. Then 35 secs for it to convert the 15 SMILES into Structures.  This definitely was not the performance I knew.

A display bug: After From SMILES, the first header column is too tall, so I double click to shrink it. But the structures are not moved along. See snapshots.

Thanks!

As the performance I saw was really surprising, I now tested J4X older versions: 6.2.1.1020.x86 and 6.1.2.731 and got even worse performance numbers, not the slick J4X I remember. Then I tried a user's computer with J4X 6.2.0.953 and it only took 20 seconds for the same operation from beginning to finish (10sec for loading and 10sec for conversion and display).  The difference is I have Office 2013 and the user is using Office 2010.  So the assumption is the J4X performance significantly decreases with Office 2013, both loading and SMILE2Structure conversion become 4 times slower (10 sec vs 40 sec).  This is a challenge for our future Office upgrade.  Thanks!

I just realize it was correct for J4X to consider I was not licensed, b/c my perpetual license does not qualify me to run the latest version, which was release after my Support Expiration date.

I am very confused now. I am now testing the latest version on my Windows8.1 laptop with Office 2013.
The performance is very fast, 15 secs.
Although I see a bug that I don't see on the other machine, the display does not resize the cell as specified in my options.

I have another problem, "JChem" tab does not shown on the ribbon, on every launch of Excel, I need to manually check the "JChem Excel, Excel Add-In" within the Options in order to show the JChem tab. That choice is not memorized.

I guess maybe the best is for me to do a TC with ChemAxon, if that's possible.

Hi Yingyao,

Thank you for your feedback, please find my answers below:

1. License issue: AFAIK you received a new license file in email on 14th May, which is valid until April 2016 have you tried to install that one as well?

2. Structure display issue in 2013: is your Office 2013 64-bit version? Is your computer's Windows operating system updated?

I was able to reproduce a similar structure display issue on win 8.1, O2013-64 bit. I could not reproduce the same issue you described on win 7, O2013-64-bit and win 8.1, O2013-32bit. BTW, this could be related to a Windows upgrade, but we need to investigate it, so it would be good t know, when your win 8.1 was updated? Which versions did you try before or after the possible upgrade?

3. Splash screen (banner) issue: it is already recorded in our backlog, we are working on it and let you know when the fix will be ready.

Regards,

Anna

In both cases, the Excel version is the same 2013 32-bit (15.0.4737.1000) MSO (15.0.4737.1001).  Office was last patched via Windows update on around July 15-16, 2015.

Since it's hard for you to reproduce, maybe we can show you the symptoms via TC? Thanks!

OK, tomorrow at 2 - 3 PM (CET) would be OK for you? Unfortunately, most of our developers are on holiday today, so we can't do it now.

Huge thanks to ChemAxon folks!  A update on the thread:

(1) Performance.  The slow performance was b/c my desktop has some debugging option turned on. Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE >  Software > Microsoft > Fusion, I had EnableLog set to 1 but my logPath was no longer valid. J4X tries to log but could not locate the log folder, which caused the slowness.  Launching JChem4Excel should only take about 10 sec.

(2) JChem tab not memorized (need to turn on at every launch). Two entries control this behavior

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Office > Excel > Addins  and HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Office > Excel > Addins.  There is a key called JChemExcel.JChemExcelAddin > LoadBehavior.  This was set to 3 correctly under local machine, but was set to 0 under current user.  After fix the key under current user to 3, JChem tab is shown correctly.  This probably will be patched in the near future.

(3) When Remote Desktop from win8 into win7, and lauch Excel > J4X, structures converted are not shown.  If Excel is prelaunched on win7, remote desktop afterwards, structures are displayed.  Remote from win7 into win8 is fine. Remote from win7 to win7 has the problem.

Thank you very much for the memo!

We will keep you updated on status of the issues, when Ákos comes back from holiday.
