Hello, I was randomly drawing structure in MarvinSketch 5.3 and I came across this structure and I'm unsure if it's the correct IUPAC name. I thought the suffix would be "-ene" since there's a double bond and the full name would be 2-ethyl-5-methylhexen. Please let me know if I'm wrong. Thanks!

Hello,

In general there are several possible IUPAC names for the same structure. The name you give is indeed correct, as you can see by importing that name: you get the same structure.

However, there is a preferred IUPAC name, which we try to generate. In this case, a rule says the preferred named has the longest principal chain (heptane vs hexene). Double bonds are considered for choosing between two chains of the same length. You can see that by removing one carbon atom from the heptane chain (on the left).

Best regards,

Daniel

Thank you for the response. I'm still learning IUPAC nomenclature and MarvinSketch has been very helpful =)
