jc_xxxx vs jc_xxxxb

Just wondering if there is any advantage over using the jc_xxxx function compared to the jc_xxxxb version? Are the string and blob versions provided simply for flexibility?

Yes. The blob versions are there in case the size limit of the varchar2 datatype (4000 in the database, over 32000 in PL/SQL) becomes effective for your particular needs.
