Important information about upgrading Instant JChem

Once you have installed Instant JChem you should connect to the Update Center to pick up any updates that might be available. Do this using Tools -> Update Center. Do this as soon as you have installed Instant JChem.


This AutoUpdate feature lets us easily distribute new functionality and fixes without the need for you to reinstall. There would typically only be the need to re-install when a major new version is released (e.g. a change from 1.0 to 2.0).




Updates are stored in a user's settings directory for each user. If for some reason you need to re-install the same major version of Instant JChem but the minor version is newer (e.g. you had version 1.0.1 installed but now want to install 1.0.5) then it is important that you manually remove updated modules to avoid any risk of conflict with newer versions that you are installing. To do this:




1. Close Instant JChem


2. Locate your user settings directory (something like C:\Documents and Settings\your_username\Application Data\.instantjchem on Windows or /home/your_username/.instantjchem on Linux - note the "dot" in the .instantjchem).


3. Find the particular settings directory for your version of Instant JChem (e.g. ijc_1_0)


4. In this directory delete the following 3 directories:


modules


update


update_tracking






This is not necessary if you are installing a new major version (e.g 1.0 -> 2.0) as new user settings directory will be created.

I have absolutely no luck in updating from 2.1 to 2.1.1. The *.nbm files are downloaded, it looks like they are installed upon restart but not - the Help/About... still shows v2.1...

Can you check a couple of things.





1. Check that update center is defined correctly. Use Tools->Plugins and then go to the Settings tab (the last tab).


The update center location should be set to:


http://www.chemaxon.com/instantjchem/updatecenter/ijc_2_1/catalog.xml





2. No go to the Updates tab (the first tab) and check that there are no updates to load.





3. If the above settings are correct and you have loaded all the updates please copy the text from the Help -> About Instant JChem and paste it into this forum topic so that we can look at it. It should start with something like this:


Instant JChem Version: 2.1.1 (build: 071024)

I tested to use clean IJC 2.1 installation and successfully updated it to 2.1.1 also on Windows XP. I have exactly the same configuration except JDK version. I use 1.6.0_03-b05 and your Java version is 1.6.0_02-b05. But I don't know about any reason why this difference should cause this problem. It's possible there is something corrupted in your IJC userdir.





Could you, please, try this:


1. look at "C:\Documents and Settings\saettel\Application Data\.instantjchem\ijc_2_1\var\log\messages.log" (maybe also other files in this dir) and if there are any error messages, please send us the file(s). Please check it if it doesn't contain any sensitive data first, it's not likely, but still possible.





2. Try to rename "C:\Documents and Settings\saettel\Application Data\.instantjchem\ijc_2_1" directory to something else (e.g. ijc_2_1_old) and then run IJC2.1 again and try to update.
