Marvin Sketch and Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard"

Has Marvin Sketch been tested on "Snow Leopard?" Marvin Sketch has become unusable since I upgraded to 10.6. Any attempt to select, copy, and paste a structure results in a crash.

No, we have not tested it under OS X 10.6 yet. Current release has been tested under OS X 10.5.

Do you use the MarvinSketch desktop application or the MarvinSketch applet?

Have you got any error message on the Java console?

The desktop application is crashing. A >2000-line error message (see attachment) shows up in the console. Here are the first 30 lines:

At the moment, we do not provide support for Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6). But we plan to extend support also to this platform in the future.

Despite of it, I have taken a small investigation in this subject.

It seems that not Marvin the only (Java) application that is crashed under the new OS X. Several other applications (e.g. Eclipse) crashes and throws similar exception with OS X 10.6.

Google drops several hints to this query: "OS X 10.6 java crash EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)".

We assume that it can be a general OS X issue.

I don't know if it is general- I have SL and MarvinSketch (5.2.5) runs without a problem, including any of the 'Tools' menu.  I have the latest Java (1.6.0_15) as well.

I've found a work around for the Marvin Sketch/Snow Leopard crash-on-copy problem. After reading that the 64-bit Java that is installed under Snow Leopard no longer supports certain graphics formats it occurred to me that the "Molecule Format" settings (found under the "Copy" tab of Marvin Sketch Preferences) might be the source of the problem. I found that "Bitmap Image" was the selected option on all of the Snow Leopard workstations on which Marvin Sketch crashed immediately after copying a structure to the Clipboard. Deselecting "Bitmap Image" fixed the problem!

Thanks for the feadback.

It seems that new OS X system does not accept all clipboard formats than other OS X systems do.

We will investigate what can be the solution for this compatibility issue.

We have fixed several issues in Copy. These are available in upcomming release (5.3.2). It will be available in a couple of days.
