I am running MarvinSketch through IE. After editing a structure, when I tried to save the structure in a local disk, it said "Cannot write file d:\.....".

what is the problem?

The user who launches Internet Explorer (and Java applet) has no permission to write in the required directory. Save file into another place or consult with your system administrator to give you the proper privileges to access the required directory.

.My user is an administrator user. I use  Marvin Applet version 5.1.4.

This problem is only appeared in Windows Vista IE. For XP, there is no problem.

For Firefor running in Windows Vista aslo does not have this problem.

MarvinSketch's running under Vista IE seems wierd. My user name is chyhu.

MarvinSketch can save molecular file only somewhere under c:\Usres\chyhu\.., not other directory, but can open file anywhere.

But after saving, only MarvinSketch can find it and open it.

IE can find it,  but can not open it.

Computer file search can not find it.

After restarting the computer,  MarvinSketch can still find it and open it.

Thanks

If my assumption is correct, it is not a Marvin bug. This is a general Windows Vista issue: the side effect the Program Files Folder protection feature of Windows Vista.

Although you have got administrator privileges on your Vista machine, - because of security reason - several applications (like IE7) does not run in administrator mode, in default. In this case, writting anything into protected folders (like "Program Files") is prohibited. Unfortunatelly, Vista does not warning when you try to save something into the above folder. Instead of that, save your modification into your home folder with the same path. When you open the application again, you will see the changes because Vista reads modification from the home folder and merge with the real content of the protected folder.

This "briliant" Vista improvement causes problem when you save something into the protected folder as normal user then open the same folder in administrator mode with another application. In this case, you will not see changes that you have commited in normal mode, since current application runs in different mode.

I believe the problem is similar in your case.

If you search after this problem in Google, you will get a lot of hints about it.

To avoid it I suggest that you do not write any file under the "C:\Program Files" folder.
