Copy structure to Open Office

Hi ...

I use Suse Linux 10.1 with KDE 3.5, OpenOffice 2.0.2

MarvinSketch/Swing 4.1.5

JVM: Sun Microsystems Inc. Java 1.4.2_11

OS: i386 Linux 2.6.16.27-0.6-default

I hoped that it is possible to copy a structure from MarvinSketch to OpenOffice directly, but it is not possible. Copying a SMILE-Structure was possible, but I need a picture for my pupils.

Thanks in advance ... Birgit Lachner

Okay ... copying is still not working but I found some informations. So it should be possible:

One reason for that it is not possible to copy a bitmap might be, that my applet is not signed. I wasnt told that I install a signed applet (http://www.chemaxon.com/marvin/doc/dev/signing.html)

Any ideas?

Hello, I am just investigating what is going on with OpenOffice. Still, there is a workaround if you want to insert pictures: save the molecule picture (File / Save Image) and insert the image as an object. But you are right, simple copy should work.

Hi ...

yes I know this way via exporting the picture to a bitmap-file. But that a bit to unconfortable if I have many structures to copy.

Certainly that is unconvenient and simple c&p should work. I will let you know soon if I found a fix or the cause of the bug.

It seems to be a Java bug. Image copy does not work from Java to OpenOffice. Till it works between two Java applications. We will investigate it how to solve this problem.

Hi I am using MarvinSketch version 4.1.5. I want to know if there exists a plugin into Open Office ( currently using 2.0) similar to ChemDraw into Microsoft Word. And if so, where do I find it and how do I install it.

Many Thanks

Would you like an insertable Marvin OLE object?

Marvin is going to support it since Marvin 4.2 (probably earlier).

It is under testing. So you can try it in the pre-(alpha) release of 4.2.

The Windows version of Marvin Beans installer (in the above release) installs the OLE server for Marvin Beans, automatically.

Hi Tamas

The OLE object for Marvin works very nicely. Just one problem, the bonds in both MS Office as well as in Open Office have jaggered lines i.e. no anti aliasing is being applied as opposed to the original image in Marvin. Is there a way to get around this?

OLE uses EMF typed vector graphical images. EMF images do not support anti-aliasing. This feature is only available at raster (bitmapped) images (like PNG or JPEG)

To come back to the original topic theme: I'm also interested in Open Office support! Copy & Paste of images is still not working, which makes working with marvinsketch very slow ... Do you plan to fix the problem?

It is a linux specific Java bug. We have not found workaround yet for this problem. I can not promise to fix it in the next major release. But we would like to solve this problem sooner or later.

Hi,

I found an easy workaround to copy/paste a Marvin image to OpenOffice on Linux. Use Ksnapshot 3.5.2.

1) Produce the image in Marvin.

2) Start ksnapshot and cut an area ("Bereich") of the image you want. This can be single a formula or the total screen.

3) Copy the screenshot to the clipboard ("Zwischenablage").

4) Paste the image into OpenOffice.

See the two screenshots (Also produced with ksnapshot ;-)
