We are having problems with MarvinSketch 4.1.0 and a recent version of Internet Explorer on XP. The symptom is that MarvinSketch loads and runs fine, but when we load the applet a second time, it hangs the machine, and only a reboot corrects the problem. Windows won't close, the task manager won't start. Firefox, on the other hand, works fine.

Clear browser/JRE cache. Caching problems of the browser/Java can often cause misterious errors.
Please see the following topic about it:
How I can clear JRE cache?
If it is not help, check the Java console. An error message or the exception's stack trace should be there that can help for debugging the problem.
Investigating of the web servers' access log can also be useful for debugging. Probably, a failed file request is there that can cause freezing in the applet.

The problem happens even when I clear both the browser and the JRE cache.
The web server log shows no abnormal behavior.
I did not run with the Java console, so I can't report what happens there; next time a student comes with a laptop and a complaint, I will try to get more information.
