Change orientation of atomic labels - how can it be done.

I have to say that I love MarvinSketch on my Mac.

There is one thing that bugs me and I have not be able to handle that in a satisfying way.

I.e. the orientation of the Atom labels.

e.g. I want to be able to choose between an -CH2- or -H2C- or the unfavourable variation - see the attached picture.

When I am changing the label with the editor i get crooked labels with shifted atoms

Dear Daniel,

thank you for your kind words.

Unfortunately, there is no straightforward way to change the implicit hydrogen display.

However, rewriting one by one - creating alias atoms - using the Label editor tool you can reformat the atom labels.

To do so

1. Select the Label editor tool on your left.

2. Click on the label to be changed.

3. Format the label. i.e. write CH2 then make 2 subscript.

4. Thick the Alias option on the toolbar or while confirming the changes.

For more information on the Atom label tool please consult your User's Guide or this tutorial video.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Dear Nikolett,

I did as you have advised, but I am not quite satisfied. The alias option seems to leave a label that I want when it comes to the letters and the index.

But the positioning of the label in relation to the bonds are a little of then. :(

I know I am german..... Wouldn't that be a great little thing to include in an upgrade? I think there was something like this in former times when I used ChemDraw on Windows systems. It was called "flag right", "flag left" or "center". But that is decades in the past.

Thank you for your support.

Dear Daniel,

thank you for your suggestion, we will consider it.

In the meanwhile may be you can try to center your newly created label (on the alias atom).

Just click on it with the Atom Label tool, a new toolbar appears under the Template bar, where the last element is a drop-down box set 'Auto' by default. Select 'Center' and click 'Enter' or on the green tick under the atom label box.

I hope it will help.

Best regards,

Nikolett

Hello Nikolett,

i just tried your suggestion and it does make the label look better.

Now my -CH2- looks a lot more than it should and I am able to

use it without students making fun of my skills.

For future updates of MarvinSketch I still would like the software

to handle this a bit smoother or to provide an easy way to determine the actual

look of the label.

You have bee very supportive and thank you for  you easy to follow advise.

Best regards from Germany
