Hello,

I am new to Marvin Sketch. How does one make a simple gas like CO? The GUI seems to add automatically add hydrogens to satisfy the valence of carbon.

Best,

Eric

Dear Eric,

the simplest way is to paste " carbon dioxide" into the canvas. In this case [C-]#[O+] will appear on the canvas, as MarvinSketch does not support the coexistence of different bondtypes between two atoms.

If you need the traditional way you can create a CO abbreviated group or draw an acetylene molecule and replace the atoms by 'alias' atoms using the Label editor tool.

You can find the above mentioned versions in the attached files.

Should you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

He means, the simplest way is to paste "carbon monoxide" onto the canvas.

Perhaps you're seeing extraneous H atoms because you forgot to put a negative charge on the C (and a positive charge on O).

If you want to draw the carbene resonance structure for CO, where both atoms are neutral, you put a double bond between C and O, right click on the C, and choose Radical -> Divalent singlet.
