When copying a molecule in MarvinSketch and copying it into Chemdraw it pastes as a chemdraw object on the pc and as an image on the mac. We are using Chemdraw version 8 on the mac. Is this a limitation of the mac or a bug? Thanks,

Trevor

Probably, you use Java 1.4 (or higher version) to run Marvin. (You can check it in the >About Java VM" window by selecting "Help->Java VM" from the Marvin menu.)

Actually, this ChemDraw pasting problem is a Mac specific Java bug. The 1.4 version of Mac Java can not place data in non-standard MIME format (like "chemical/x-mdl-molfile") to the clipboard.

It means you can paste from Marvin to ChemDraw only a text or an image with this Java.

To be able to copy a molecule as a ChemDraw object from Marvin under OS X, you should use Marvin with Java 1.3.1. But the disadvantage of this solution is that Java 1.3.1 does not support image copy.

How you can launch Marvin with Java 1.3.1? I will try to explain it in a few words.

If you launch Marvin as a desktop application (clicking on the icon of MarvinSketch or MarvinView), Marvin will run under Java 1.3.1.

If you would like to use Marvin from a browser, you have to know the following about Mac browsers:

The browsers under OS X (except for Safari), use Java 1.3.1 to launch applets as the default.

If Java Embedded Plugin (JEP) is installed on your Mac, then Mozilla, Firefox and Netscape will use 1.4 (or higher) version of Java for running applets. In this case, you can choose Internet Explorer that uses Java 1.3 (since it does not support JEP).
