As I discussed with all of you we had shorter release cycles for 6.1 and 6.2. Just for completeness for this forum, I'm adding the explanation and release information for these two releases here.
ChemAxon release cycle is fixed for 4 months (since version 5.12). So called "commit deadlines" for major releases are now set to beginning of March, July and November. After each commit deadline only newly discovered critical bugs can be fixed. The following testing and stabilization usually takes around 2-2,5 months (based on experiences with 5.12-6.1), but final release day depends on quality criteria, so is not set for exact day. We hope that for the future releases the stabilization will be shorter than 2 months.
Our (Instant JChem team) goal for 6.1 and 6.2 was to synchronize better with ChemAxon release timeboxing. That's why we skipped prioritization for 6.1 completely and for 6.2 we moved it to 6.3. Please see attached document which explains this graphically.
Despite shorter release cycles (6.1 and 6.2 had 2,5 months each instead of 4 months release cycle) there were a lot of new development and also fixed bugs, among others:
- Major feature for 6.1 was a new Form model API which allows lots of applications - e.g. generation of new forms, modifying existing programatically, etc.
- Microsoft SQL server support is a new significant development in 6.2 - it was an important database which JChem supported for many years, but it was missing in IJC
For more information about 6.1 please go to the Release notes and 6.2 preliminary list of features is attached. There are more bugfixes planned for 6.2, the list will be updated later under this Forum topic.
