I suppose none of these conditions is true in your situation, but please check them:

You may receive this error message if any one of the
following conditions is true:

• The folder that you are trying to install the Windows
  Installer package to is encrypted.


• The drive that contains the folder that you are trying to
  install the Windows Installer package to is accessed as a substitute
  drive.


• The SYSTEM account does not have Full Control permissions
  on the folder that you are trying to install the Windows Installer package to.
  You notice the error message because the Windows Installer service uses the
  SYSTEM account to install software.

I supposed we need SP3 on XP, but it doesn't seem to be enough, as you mentioned in your email.

Good suggestions. I will certainly check. Despite the fact that I got the error message the software was installed. What are the problems that I can experience due to this error message?

As a result, EMF images (on the clipboard) won't be smooth. And I suppose you might have problems with uninstall, but I'm not sure.

Did you simply installed 5.3.8 as an upgrade? (Without uninstalling the older one?) We've got a similar report that we have been analysing now. I will share our result if we find something.

I am having the same issue with JChem 16.1.11.0. When the installation reached the end of Marvin Beans, there is an error, "cannot run installdotnetapi.bat".

Running 64 bit Windows 8.1, MS Office 2013 Pro Plus 32 bit, Java and JRE 32 and 64 bit version 8u66.

Have tried 32 and 64 bit JChem with and without included Java. I get the same error each time.

Because this thread is several years old, I have started a new one and added my installation logs.
